Why do my eyes swell when I cry?

I am a sensitive girl. I always cry when I was touched by the movie or something else. And sometimes when I feel bad, I will cry for some relief. My parents and friends can see that from my swelled eyes. I want to know why the eyes will swell.

Your emotional tears are produced in response to a strong emotion. With emotional tears, the lacrimal glands are sent into overdrive, which will produce a continuous flow of watery tears. The fine tissues around your eyes will absorb some of the overflow of tears, which can cause the eyes to become temporarily swollen. Once experts suggest "having a good cry" can make you feel physically and emotionally better because that crying is the body's way of eliminating toxins caused by elevated stress. While having swollen and puffy eyes after lengthy crying can be an unwanted telltale side effect.
