repair frames to glasses

I'm trying to find out how to repair the frames of my 13-yr-old son's glasses. Local eyeglass repair shops want almost the same amount I paid for them new. Is there a special type of soldering gun and solder that is used for eyeglass frames? I've been searching all over the web but haven't found any useful info so far. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

I used to work for an optometrist, and we would come across this situation quite often. Ask your optometrist if they have any old frames which they can take either the temples or the front off of (depending on which piece is broken in your case). We used to have lots of old frames, and could usually find a match when the patient didn't want to buy a new pair; we never charged much for this, and sometimes even did it for free.A store front optometrist (Vision Center, etc.) probably won't do this, but your local optometrist might. As for glue, solder, tape, if you get it to work well and not show, you'll be the first that I'm aware of.

Eyeglasses are normally silver-soldered. Best of my knowledge it's not d-i-y stuff (I sympathize on the glasses repairs). Haven't had to have any repaired in a long time so don't recall the cost. Considering how expensive new stuff is, tho, I'm surprised a repair would be that much.
