Is the dilated eye drops harmful when it is used before an eye exam?

Most doctors will apply eye drops to dilate the pupil before an eye exam. I want to know whether this eye drops is harmful to our eyes or not?

    It may have side effects, but as long as you use them according to the doctor's instruction, it won't cause serious problem. After your pupils have been dilated, you should wear sunglasses to protect your eyes in the bright sunlight, otherwise the UV rays will get into your eyes and cause damage to your eye.
