Why do I have pain in one eye when waking up?

I wake up in the morning with excruciating pain in my left eye. It goes away usually after 10 minutes. I am an IT programmer and spend all day on laptop if that matters. There is history of glaucoma in family. Should I worry about that?

It may caused by dry eyes. When you are asleep, your eyes are not fully closed. Your cornea is not covered by your lids and can get dry out easily. As the cornea is very sensitive, this causes the acute pain, which disappears quickly, but is can sometimes leave you with an aching eye. You don't need worry about that too much.

Eye pain that is worse in the morning and better as the day progress without any loss of vision can be caused by dry eyes due to cornea exposure at night. Other conditions that can cause such eye pain include optic nerve problem as in glaucoma, inflammation of the sclera or episcleritis due to underlying autoimmune inflammatory connective tissue or collagen vascular condition.
