Sihouette Eyewear

Sihouette is a frame manufacturer that always utilizes “state of the art” technologies. Now, it launches the Voyager lens, which is developed by NASA’s Astronaut Corps with assistance from Sihouette’s Austria-based R&D team and sun lens maker Christian Dalloz. Nowadays, UV exposure becomes an increasing concern partially because it is closely linked with macular degeneration. The newly developed Voyager sunglass lenses are made from a polycarbonate substrate and treated with a proprietary soft brown/bronze mirrored tint. The basic function of these lenses is that they can reduce light transmission. During the decades since the mid 1990s, Sihouette has been the NASA’s primary frame provider. According to Keith Manuel, a practitioner and senior optometrist at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, lenses produced by Sihouette are applicable to an astronaut. This is quite significant because the astronauts usually need to perform unique visual tasks under unique circumstances.

For instance, astronauts require the lenses to be durable in space. They can not tolerate glasses that have a failure during a space walk, because they are not able to get a hand up to adjust the eyewear. A screw coming out of the frames is subtle on the earth, but it can be life and death in the space since it can float into the breathing apparatus. During the decades’ cooperation with NASA, Sihouette has conducted numerous “trial and error” experiments with several combinations of frames, lens materials and lens treatments. Only with such efforts can Sihouette produce glasses that match specific space tasks. And astronauts usually bring several pairs of glasses for use during each mission. A key point of the Voyager lens is that it improves “astronaut acuity” by addressing light transmission in space travel.

Explained by Dr. Manuel, Voyager uses a bi-layer metallic flash mirror. The first layer is chromium and the second is siliciumoxide which is the same material used for glass lenses. This combination of two layers produces a durable lens that offers excellent visual acuity and light transmission. Voyager lenses produced by Sihouette can best answer the demand from astronauts as a very intelligent crowd.
