In the Irving, optometrists can be found in the vicinity of a chain optical retail store, or in an independent optometrist's office. Optometrists are trained to address both vision refractive errors and eye health. Many optometrists sell high-end eyeglasses and contact lenses in their practices with the most professional possible services in addition to performing eye exams and writing prescriptions. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors (MD) in the eye care and vision health who perform eye exams, write prescription for eyeglasses, sunglasses and contact lenses, diagnose and treat eye diseases and carry out eye surgery. Ophthalmologist's responsibility is much beyond that of optometrist.

  • The doctor can determine if you are short sighted by asking you to read the certain row on the letter chart. Most nearsighted people can't read the small letters at the bottom of the chart but farsighted people can. Also the optometrist will also ask the patient to read something on a piece of paper. If you need the paper to be further away to be able to read it, then you are farsighted.

  • Yellow tinted sunglasses can improve the light contrast to make things more clear, so they are much useful in cloudy days or at night. But it is not a good choice to wear them in sunny days as they could make the lights more glaring. You may choose polarized lens which can reduce glare for cycling.

  • There is a high chance that you could develop glaucoma if there is a history of glaucoma in your family. But you should not worry too much about it as it is much easier to treat such disease nowadays if it is diagnosed in time.

  • Amber is too dark for night driving and it is often used for daytime driving. It is better to use bright color such as yellow which can improve the light contrast with an anti reflection coating. That really improves night vision and help eliminates glare from oncoming cars and street lights.

  • Pesonally speaking, I would not suggest to wear contacts cuz they have a higher risk of getting infection than wearing glasses. Though extended contacts are designed specifically for overnight use and are also far more permeable, you can also get irritation and other eye problem when using them.

  • People over 50s are likely to have Macular degeneration. Some studies have suggested that some forms of macular degeneration may be more common in women, but other factors such as age, smoking, race, and family history are more important to affect macular degeneration.
