Why does astigmatism get worse with age?

I found that I got astigmatism 5 years ago. In order to protect my eyesight, I will do eye exams regularly. However I found that my astigmatism got worse. Why? Will I be blind when I am old? How to protect it from getting worse?

I have asked my eye doctor. He said that astigmatism was a very common visual defect. Many vision problems will get worse with age, so does astigmatism. Don't worry too much. There are many ways to protect it from getting worse. You can keep a healthy balanced diet, which can provide your eyes with enough nutrients. You should keep on doing eye exercise when your eyes are tired.

I know that astigmatism does get worse but it does happen at a very slow rate. If you have a mild astigmatism it's not going to get worse over night. I never heard that astigmatism will cause blind when the patients get old. So I think you will not get blind. Usually we treat astigmatism with glasses or contact lenses. but you can have lasik treatment which can cure the astigmatism.

Astigmatism is a very common vision problem. In fact, most people have some. When you have astigmatism, light does not focus to a single point in your eye. Instead, it causes blurred vision because the front of the eye is shaped more like a football than a baseball.

Unfortunately, astigmatism can (and often does) change throughout your life, usually for the worse with age. But astigmatism is not a disease and can be compensated for with glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery.
