Does New York still require an eye exam for license renewals?

I have heard that New York DMV cancel requirement for eye exam and you can self-certify. But I just got my renewal information and they are asking for me to take an eye exam. Can anybody tell me what is the problem?

    I have also heard that eye exams are no longer required for license renewal.The change allows drivers renewing licenses to “self-certify” that their vision is good enough to safely operate a motor vehicle. I don't know why you are asked to take an eye exam again . Maybe you can visit the website http://www.dmv.ny.gov/ to make it clear .
