The optic nerve transmits visual information from the retina to the brain. Derived from the embryonic retinal ganglion cell, a diverticulum located in the diencephalon, the optic nerve does not regenerate after transection.

The optic nerve is a bundle of tissue which connects the eye with the brain. It transmits the signals from the retina of the eye to the brain. It has a group of nerve fibers, although it is more closely related to brain tissue than to nerve tissue.
