Can I just buy over the counter reading glasses without my prescription?

I just got a prescription for glasses- Dr said that I should use them anytime I am reading, on the computer, watching tv etc. My rx is +1.25 in both eyes and astigmatism in my right eye only -50. Would I be able to buy over the counter reading glasses and get the same results?

No. You can't buy over the counter reading glasses without prescritpion because the OTC reading glasses have the same prescription in both lenses and they can't treat astigmatism. Since you have astigmatism in your right eye, the OTC reading glasses won't work well for you. You'd better go to an optician to get prescription reading glasses which would fit you properly.

Of course you can. Since you have the same prescription in both eyes and your astigmatism is not strong, you can buy over the counter reading glasses without prescription. Though OTC reading glasses won't treat astigmatism, a slight astigmatism won't affect your vision. Just go to any drug store to find the right prescription reading glasses and try them on. If you feel comfortable with them on, then you can buy them.

Though over the counter glasses will not damage our eyes, I won't suggest you to buy a pair of over the counter glasses for you may suffer from eye strain and fatigue because over the counter glasses may have flaws and distortions in their lenses. And they may not fit for your face shape and make your look like a nerd. you may have blurred vision when you use them to see the distance if the whole lens is for reading. So you'd better buy a pair of prescription reading glasses.

My father bought a pair of over the counter glasses last year. He said that the glasses can help correct his vision problem. And he refused to have his eyesight checked again and buy a pair of prescription glasses. Because he seldom uses reading glasses so I said nothing and let him do what he wanted. But I won't suggest you to buy a pair of over the counter glasses. Though the price is much cheaper when compared with a pair of prescription glasses in the physical stores, the prescription glasses sold online is much cheaper than that in physical shops. And over the counter glasses have poorer quality when compared with prescription glasses sold online. So why not choose a pair of prescription glasses online?
