Do contact lenses have the same prescription just like ordinary eye glasses?

I have been worn glasses for years. Now I want to get some contact lenses.I just want to know should I have an eye exam before I buy the contact lenses. Is the prescription of contact lenses the same as that of glasses?

Generally speaking, contact lenses don't give you as good sight as glasses (for example my contacts are +1 more than my glasses), so the prescription of the contact lenses is always different from that of glasses. But the colored contacts don't have prescription which is just the same as the non-prescription glasses.

In most cases, they are not the same. The power of contact lenses are usually less than that of eyeglasses because the contact lenses are placed directly on the eyeball.
