Why is polycarbonate used for protective glasses?

I see most protective glasses are made from polycarbonate, why is polycarbonate used for protective glasses?

    Polycarbonate is a strong material that can hard to get broken. So they are widely used in protective glasses. Polycarbonate lenses are lightweight and they are lighter than other materials, thus they are more comfortable to wear especiallly when people in the hard environment. In addition, Polycarbonate lenses are impact resistant, so they are difficult to get shattered to cause damage to the eyes. That's why polycarbonate is widely used in protective glasses, such as sports glasses and safety glasses. They are also widely used in kids eyeglasses.
