Lutein, also called phytoxanthin, carotenol and carotol is a very important antioxidant to human eyes. It promotes the generation of rhodopsin, the retina cell so as to prevent myopia and retina separation. It also protects eyes from ultraviolet rays and blue light in sunlight. Lacking of lutein may result in blindness. It is proved that lutein is helpful in eye disease such as cataract, myopia, asthenopia and so on. But dry eyes syndrome is not included. Vitamin A and B is helpful to your problem. So it is suggested not to take medical lutein without doctor's prescription. If you really want to try, you can eat more vegetables and fruits rich of lutein, for instance kiwi fruit or carrot. Human body can't compound lutein itself. It depends on external supplementation.

Unfortunately, there is no research shows lutein have any known effects in treating dry eye syndrome. Dry eye syndrome is a common eye disorder that make your eye feel discomfort and irritation. Maybe your eyes appear red and light sensitivity. Although lutein is necessary and important for eye health, dry eye could be caused not by lack of lutein. You should consult eye doctor about supplements to treat your dry eyes.
